A new poll shows a significant decline in AAPI adults' trust in President Trump to handle key issues, including the economy.
As the Nov. 3 midterm elections approach, it's clear that AAPI adults have become increasingly disillusioned with President Donald Trump and Republicans.
The Economy Takes Center Stage
About nine in ten AAPI adults rank the economy as one of the most important issues for the upcoming election, dwarfing other concerns like healthcare and foreign policy. In fact, only about half say this about foreign policy, crime, immigration, election fairness or climate change.
Trump's Economic Approval Plummets
According to a new AP-NORC/AAPI Data poll, Trump's economic approval among AAPI adults has dropped over the course of his second term. Only about 2 in 10 approve of his performance on the economy, which the vast majority of AAPI adults see as one of the most important issues for the upcoming election.
AAPI Adults Lose Faith in Trumps Economic Leadership
The numbers are stark: only about 2 in 10 AAPI adults approve of Trump's performance on the economy. It's no wonder that Democrats have gained ground with this group, holding a roughly 20-percentage-point advantage on both economic and immigration issues.
What's striking to me is how quickly trust has eroded in Trump among AAPI adults. The survey reveals that Trump’s standing on the economy has fallen among AAPI adults over the course of his second term. About one-quarter of AAPI adults approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president overall.
I'm curious to know more about how this shift will play out in the midterms. Will AAPI adults' concerns about the economy and healthcare translate into votes for Democrats? And what does this mean for Trump's re-election chances?
Meanwhile, Democrats have gained at Republicans' expense since Trump returned to the White House when it comes to AAPI adults' trust in handling many key issues. In fact, Democrats now hold a roughly 20-percentage-point advantage on both economic and immigration issues.
